The highs and lows about writing about Autism

Both of my older children were diagnosed with autism before they were four years old.  We weren’t surprised by either diagnosis.

No, this won't pass.. why parenting my autistic kids is different

Sometimes people say things that mean well. I recently wrote a post about how parents need time to themselves. Parenting can be overwhelming and exhausting in many ways and I need a little (often just a tiny) space to express myself to stay sane.  Many of my readers agreed.  Some added their support, saying "this will pass" but of course the reality for us is that it probably won't.

Growing plants, a spring learning activity

Jane with compost

It's finally looking like spring! Understanding the world around us is one of the fundamental areas of learning for all kids.  Many autistic kids like ours need concrete or physical activities to engage them and help them learn. So if we are want to learn about growing, then the best thing to do is actually grow something.

An inspiring character for our autistic son

Child sitting bare foot on books

This #worldbookday, Anthony's school were focusing on 'inspiring characters'. Marvellous, I not only have to think of something my autistic son will dress up as but it now had to be a character that's also inspiring?

Parents need some time to themselves

Woman working

Raising children is one of the best and one of the most time-consuming jobs ever. Taking care of the kids as they grow up is mentally exhausting. They constantly need help and support and it's our job to minimise distress whilst at the same time helping with learn to cope with it. But to cope with this, I've got to do something else too, other than worry about what's currently not working for my kids.
