Keeping our autistic kids safe outside in the sun

Keeping our autistic kids cool - a girl holding parasol

Many kids with autism have challenges with their sensory system. Their brains are wired a bit differently and this means they interpret the world around them differently too. This can sometimes make it a bit more complicated when keeping them safe outside in the sun. But we've learned a few things as they've been growing that help us.

Four things to do near Sherwood Pines Forest with my autistic kids

Our autistic boys in Sherwood Pines Forest

Travelling can sometimes be a bit challenging for our autistic kids.  It involves changes in routine, unfamiliar places and people which can be confusing. But they still greatly benefit from time away and days out.  We've recently been to Sherwood Pines Forest in Nottinghamshire and here's some of the things we got up to that you could try.

Anthony on holiday

When Anthony was seven years old we asked for him to assessed for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) because despite all the help he was getting he could not settle or concentrate in class. Paper plate rock pool holiday activity

Rock pool motor skills learning craft activity

Although the beach can be a challenge for us - it can also be great.  Quieter beaches are better and these can often be rocky.  So we use what we have and have spent many summers up at my parents place on the North Coast of Scotland, stomping around the rocks finding creatures in the shallow waters.   All the kids have fun and to either prepare or to revisit this, we had fun making our own 'rock pool' with this fun motor skills learning craft activity.

Holiday books - for the kids

Summer.  Are you lounging by the pool with a good book?  Are your kids?  No?  Well don't worry if they are. While I may be loving my copy of Talking Autism: Parenting Your Unique Child, many people read in the holidays to escape. And this can be the case for kids too.
