Madeupmilestones: The party with @2ndtimemama

madeupmilestones picture

I'm proud of so many of my kids achievements.  My boys often don't hit the same milestones as listed in the 'little red book' milestone chart and I've learned that creating our own milestone charts celebrating their own achievements is more valuable to me.  This series celebrates the #madeupmilestones of those we care about. This month it's from Mummy Times Two who shares a milestone about a birthday party.

Hello Mummy Times Two, I can't wait to hear about your #madeupmilestone.  Here we go...

1. Who has achieved their #madeupmilestone, tell us a bit about them

Number One, is my now nine year old first child. She’s beautiful, intelligent and the best big sister in the world. She knows everything there is to know about Harry Potter and can recite Scooby Doo episodes word for word. She was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at two and a half. She hated going into a room with people I wondered if she’d ever make a friend.

2. When and where did the #madeupmilestone happen?

This year Number One turned nine. I’m not sure where the years have gone, but I know that if I had looked forward and seen the future all those years ago, many of my worries would have been unfounded. Life has not always been easy, progress has often come slowly, there have been meltdowns and tears, but this year on her birthday so many of my dreams for her came true.

3. The fab part... what happened?

This year, Number One had a party, something she’s never wanted before. This year she didn’t just want one friend round, this year she wanted more. I was terrified, what if she had a meltdown, what if she didn’t enjoy it, what if it was too much? Number One was worried too, but this year unlike in previous years she decided it was ok to be worried. She decided being worried was worth doing something she really wanted to do.

So this year four friends came round, we went out for lunch, came home and they watched a DVD. We had a party. It may not have been a party by anyone else’s standards, there were no party games, there was no loud music and the house wasn’t filled with screams. But there was my beautiful brave daughter with not just one friend, but with four. And do you know something else? I was proud of my daughter, but I was also proud of her friends. Proud that they could see her for who she really is, proud that they have stuck by her, proud that they have taken the time to understand her when others have not.

Sometimes milestones don’t shout out at us, they creep up on us and before we have noticed them they have passed. But when we stop and think, how far they have come, we cannot help but smile. If only we had known, how much less we would have feared.

You can read more about Number One's achievements and about Mummy Times Two on her blog.   Thank you so much for taking part! Parties can be difficult for many kids - I'm pleased this was a great milestone for you.

  8. Ahh what a fab milestone! My son will be eleven in March and I'm considering inviting a few friends over for him as he's never done that before. I know he wants to but it's whether he can cope with it or not! A xx #spectrumsunday
